Understanding Hyperpigmentation: Key Facts and Solutions

By Roohi Ahmed, Aesthetician

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern that affects many of my clients at ALKEM. As an aesthetician, I've seen firsthand how it can impact confidence and self-esteem. But the good news is that with the right approach and treatments, it’s possible to achieve a more even, radiant complexion. Let’s dive into what hyperpigmentation is, its causes, and how we can address it.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This darkening happens due to an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and eyes. It can appear as brown, black, gray, or red spots and patches, depending on your skin tone.

Common Causes of Hyperpigmentation

Several factors contribute to hyperpigmentation. Some of the most common include:

1. Sun Exposure:

UV rays are one of the primary triggers. Prolonged sun exposure stimulates melanin production, leading to sunspots or age spots, especially on areas frequently exposed like the face, hands, and arms.

2. Inflammation:

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can occur after an injury or inflammation, such as acne, eczema, or even cuts and burns. The skin's healing process can sometimes leave behind dark marks.

3. Hormonal Changes:

Melasma, also known as the "mask of pregnancy," is a type of hyperpigmentation often triggered by hormonal changes during pregnancy or from taking birth control pills.

4. Medication:

Certain medications can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect, particularly those that make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.

How We Address Hyperpigmentation at ALKEM

At ALKEM, we take a comprehensive approach to treating hyperpigmentation. It’s not just about lightening dark spots but also about improving overall skin health. Here are some of the treatments I recommend:

1. Chemical Peels:

We use a variety of chemical peels, including glycolic acid and Melanostop, to address hyperpigmentation. These peels exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and stimulate collagen production, helping to fade dark spots and improve skin texture and tone.

2. Customized Skincare Regimen:

I believe in tailoring skincare routines to each client's specific needs. I often recommend products with the following ingredients:

  • Tranexamic acid
  • Kojic acid
  • Phytic acid
  • Alpha arbutin
  • Licorice root extract
  • Vitamin C
  • Retinoids

These ingredients are known for their ability to lighten dark spots and prevent new ones from forming.

3. GeneoX Facial:

Our GeneoX Facial combines advanced technologies to address multiple skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation. It exfoliates, oxygenates, and nourishes the skin, providing an immediate glow while gradually reducing the appearance of dark spots.

4. Sun Protection:

Prevention is key when it comes to hyperpigmentation. I always emphasize the importance of daily sun protection. Using a broad-spectrum SPF not only prevents further darkening but also protects the skin from premature aging.
